Description

30 Piece Vintage Bryn Mawr Salem China Lavender Floral Pattern.
Salem China is an early 20th century maker of china from Salem, Ohio. Salem China was founded in 1898 to manufacture hotel dishes, but it quickly shifted to more creative styles of dinnerware, novelty items and souvenir dishes. The company continued to sell china until 1999. A fire destroyed the factory once used to churn out plates, cups, and so much other dinnerware. From the 1930's through the 50's, Salem had a way of identifying the age of its china using a series of numbers and stars stamped on the back, with numbers representing the year the piece was made, and stars indicating the quarter of the year.
At its prime, Salem churned out millions of pieces of ceramic wares each year, starting with processed clay which was then molded into dishes. The process also included decorative decals and spray glazes.
There are (8) 10" larger plates
(8) 6.5" smaller plates
(8) 8" salad plates/bowls
(4) 6.25" small bowls
(1) 11.5" x 10.5" serving platter with handles
(1) 9" swerving bowl with lid
Some of the china has cracks under the glaze as one would suspect from china of this age, but the only chip I can find is on the underbelly of the serving dish lid (as seen in the picture). The chip is not visible when the lid is on the bowl.
On the bottom of the large plates: it is stamped "Bryn Mawr by Salem China Co." the letter "W". "Made in the U.S.A" and then "51"
Small plates: have "W" on 7 of them and "Z" on one of them then "51"
Salad plates have "W" on 5 of them and "Z" on three of them then "51"
Small bowls all have "W" on them then "51"
Serving platter has "U" on it then "51"
Serving bowl with lid has "V" but no date.
Condition is "Used" - very nice.
